The Dare...a ghost story

Prologue: A History of the Gibson House
The Gibson house was built in 1898 as a wedding present from Allistor Gibson to his new bride, Katherine McIntyre. The gossip at the time was that Katherine, while beautiful, was too young and too common to marry into the wealthy Gibson family. The marriage lated less than a year as Allistor met an untimely and unexplained death. The house was now Katherine's but a secret clause in his will left his vast fortune to his brothers should the marriage not last more than 10 years. The family shunned her and she soon had financial difficulty with the upkeep of the large estate. She soon married a man of moderate means and he moved into her home. He also had an early death as did her next three husbands. Her fifth husband, Stephen Berrington caught her poisoning his evening drink. He confronted her and she responded by plunging a knife into his chest. The wound was not serious and he managed to overpower her. At her trial, the truth came out about the fate of her first four husbands and she was sentenced to death by gas chamber. With her last words, she swore revenge on her husband. She was executed on the evening of October 23th, 1921. Mr. Berrington held the house in his possession for exactly one year. His housekeeper found him dead when she arrived the morning of the 24th. She described the look on his corpse as one of extreme horror-it was assumed that he died of a heart attack in his bed. For the next 30 years, the house passed through the hands of a dozen owners-none staying for more than a year. The final owners, in fact only stayed for the month of October before suddenly moving out leaving all their possessions behind. The house became abandoned and derelict. Any valuables left in it had been looted and the home became a resting place for vagrants but they never stayed long.

October 23-present day:
The teens were giddy. They crawled through a broken window in the old house and made their way into the living room. Like most teens, they were thrill seekers but they took it to a higher level than most. They did things like "who could outrun the pitbull in the junkyard" or "who could stand on the train tracks the longest in the face of an oncoming train." They always argued about who was the bravest and this night, Ricky planned to prove that it was he. He bragged that he would spend the night in the abandoned Gibson house. It was long rumored that it was haunted but they just attributed the strange lights and noises that were heard from time to time as being caused by the homeless people that sometimes took up shelter there. Just last week, the police arrested an old bum on the property. He was screaming incoherently on the front porch and was trying to light the place on fire. His face had been badly clawed apparently by himself and he was taken to an asylum. The teens searched the house to make sure it was empty. They stayed until they ran out of beer and then left Ricky alone in the house. He texted his friends at 11pm and attached a photo of himself to prove he was still there.His plan was to do that every hour until sunrise. His battery then went dead on his phone. "Damn," he cursed "what the heck am I going to do now?" Robbed of his toy, he just decided to try and sleep. By flashlight, he found his way into the upper bedroom. In the corner was an old vinyl mattress and army blanket. "Probably left here by that homeless guy" he though to himself. It wasn't very clean but hey, he had crashed in worse places so he laid down on it and fell asleep.

He awoke from the cold. It seemed to reach right into his very bones. He heard a noise and turned on his flashlight but dropped it in horror as he saw "her" materialize before him. As she drifted towards him he realized too late that he had never been brave...just foolish.
